We speak of cardiac arrest, or cardiocirculatory arrest, when the heart is no longer able to circulate blood effectively within the body (therefore failing to supply blood to the vital organs) or when it completely stops beating.
Cardiac arrest, therefore, is a condition of reversible clinical death which, if not adequately and promptly treated, is destined to transform into irreversible biological death due to the lack of oxygenation to the main organ of the central nervous system, the brain.
The main causes of cardiac arrest are ventricular fibrillation (chaotic and very rapid arrhythmia which causes uncoordinated contractions of the heart muscle which leads to the cessation of cardiac output), the ventricular tachycardia (arrhythmia characterized by a ventricular frequency greater than 100 beats per minute), coronary artery disease (alteration of the coronary arteries), respiratory arrest, suffocation, changes in the structure of the heart, hypothermia, electrocution, drowning , a drastic drop in blood pressure and alcohol and drug abuse. Sometimes, however, the causes of cardiac arrest are still unknown. Also, nausea, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, weakness, or chest pain may occur before cardiac arrest.
The person suffering from cardiac arrest suddenly falls to the ground unconscious, has difficulty breathing (gasping or being out of breath) and does not respond even to vigorous shaking.
In order to avoid certain death of the patient, it is necessary to intervene in a timely manner. The only life-saving therapy, in these cases, is the use of a defibrillator alternating with the appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, abbreviated to CPR, is performed by alternating cardiac massage, aimed at supporting the blood circulation to the vital organs, and the insufflation of air through the victim’s mouth, to oxygenate their lungs. In case of cardiac arrest, a well-performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation can increase the chances of survival up to 75%.
The HeartSine® samaritan® PAD 500P defibrillator is able to guide the rescuer, in real time, during the execution of the chest compressions practiced on the patient. The instructions you may receive are the following: “Well done compressions”, “Deeper compressions”, “Faster compressions” and “Slower compressions” .
These controls are also displayed on the front of the device to ensure that the rescuer can perform CPR in the most appropriate manner possible.
The samaritan® PAD 500P, in fact, through the analysis of the impedance cardiogram (ICG) performed on the patient, is able to measure the variations in impedance in the thoracic cavity thus determining the actual effectiveness of the chest compressions performed by the rescuer. In this way, the defibrillator is able to guide the user in delivering the intensity and speed of pressionon required for the specific subject. The objective to be achieved while performing CPR is to hear the message “Compressions well done” and then to display the green CPR light.
In the event of cardiac arrest, the biggest challenge resides in correctly performing the cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. Sometimes, unfortunately, CPR is not performed effectively even by experienced rescuers.

Other defibrillators on the market have a Feedback CPR system based on the depth of chest compressions performed on the patient however, it is evident that this feedback is not at all realistic, nor reliable: a 5 cm chest compression on a man weighing 80 kg may not be effective enough; the same depth of compression on a 30-kilogram girl could even cause her rib cage to break.
