Welcome back to the PVS blog and to a new appointment with our news.
This week we pick up from the last blog post published: after following all the steps for recognizing and cleaning a wound, it’s time to apply the plaster or gauze. It seems like a simple step, but actually, protecting a wound in the most appropriate and correct way possible will help it heal faster – even scientific studies affirm it.
So, let’s find out how to perfectly apply a plaster thanks to the support of an article read on band-aid.com.
Before you start choosing which covering is most suitable for the wound you are about to cover, pay attention to an essential element: moisture. New cells heal wounds twice as fast when kept moist under a dressing. Therefore, always try to protect a wound with a plaster rather than leaving it exposed to the air without any protection.
No scabs, no scars The formation of scabs on wounds slows down the healing process and increases the possibility of unsightly scars. This is also why it’s important to bandage a wound immediately with a plaster or dressing.
Reduce the risk of infection Be consistent in always keeping the wound covered with a plaster, gauze, or bandage to protect yourself from any contaminating agents, bacteria, dirt, irritations that can worsen the wound by infecting it.
A dressing for larger wounds If what you need to cover is not a small wound or a modest-sized cut, forget about plasters and use gauze, dressings, and medical tape instead. Follow these instructions to ensure the best protection.
Step 1: Choose the right adhesive tape for your wound, especially if you are prone to skin irritations or if the area to be covered with dressings is heavily subjected to movement (in this case, you’ll need a very resistant one).
Step 2: Choose the right gauze. The dressing must be of the appropriate size, larger than the wound it needs to cover in all directions, resulting in generous coverage. However, don’t overdo it with the gauze: if it’s too large, trim it to size with scissors before securing it with adhesive tape.
Step 3: Cut the adhesive tape and apply it to the edges of the gauze/bandage, covering half of the former and half of the latter. Make sure it adheres well to both surfaces and doesn’t come off! If the wound is “fresh,” firmly fix all four sides of the gauze to keep dirt and germs away.
